Preserving Hoosier
Families
Lt.
Governor Becky Skillman believes that Hoosier families provide the
foundation for our success as a state. She and Governor Mitch Daniels
recognize that government alone cannot provide every service or meet
every need. They understand that the best way to move Indiana forward
is by preserving and strengthening our Hoosier families.
One of the first acts of the Daniels-Skillman
Administration was the creation of the Office of Faith-Based and
Community Initiatives (OFBCI), a state agency established to allow
faith-based organizations to have equal access to state and federal
resources. As a result, OFBCI has provided information, training,
technical assistance and grants to community and faith-based
organizations seeking to make Indiana a better place to live for all
citizens.
Over the course of her years in public service,
Becky has worked to support these very causes. She has been an
advocate for pregnancy care centers and during her 12 years as a state
senator, she recorded a 100 percent pro-life voting record. As Lt.
Governor, Becky has traveled from South Bend to Evansville to visit
with citizens dedicated to the cause of saving lives and winning
hearts.
The Daniels-Skillman Administration, often
described as one of the most pro-life administrations in Indiana
history, has supported these causes in many ways. Governor Daniels
signed legislation requiring healthcare professionals to provide
pregnant women with information about the availability of an
ultrasound and the opportunity to listen to a baby's heartbeat prior
to performing an abortion. Additionally, he signed legislation
regulating clinics and holding those to the same health and safety
standards as hospitals. The Daniels-Skillman administration also
approved a Choose Life license plate, the proceeds of which support
pregnancy care centers throughout Indiana.
Supporting the sanctity of life and strengthening
families is a personal issue close to Lt. Governor Skillman's heart.
Shortly after graduating high school, Becky married her high school
sweetheart, Steve, and one day before their tenth wedding anniversary,
their only son, Aaron was born. Because they waited so long to have a
child, and because many of her family members experienced these same
struggles, Becky devoted herself to passing adoption legislation in
the Indiana Senate. Due to her hard work, state law now makes
adoptions easier and even more importantly, it gives Hoosier families
finality to their adoption.
In addition to authoring adoption legislation, as
state senator Becky also supported efforts to define marriage as a
union between one man and one woman. In 2004, Becky co-authored
legislation to allow Hoosiers, not politicians or judges, to
ultimately decide this issue.
Public service often requires making tough
decisions for the good of all. Individuals are required to take up a
cause greater than themselves. A devoted public servant, Becky knows
this firsthand, and she is proud to work on behalf of Hoosier
families.
